A Storyteller's Brush
Media: Watercolor, India ink
Size: 15 x 22"
Original: $300
This was an image I created for the 2009 annual "Creative Native" competition. held at Garfield Park in Indianapolis. Each person who enters gets
two days on-site to create their piece with the materials they bring, and there is a general theme that all artists are supposed to follow. This year's
theme was "Art: What does it mean?"
So the point of this piece is that for me, art is all about storytelling. As an illustrator, it's my job to provide the images to clarify and expand on
whatever story I'm telling, whether it's my own or not. In this case, the image is of seven of my own characters. Not only do I define their stories by
my art, but in turn, those stories "define" me-- shown by the silhouette.
For the curious, the characters are, in order:
- The Guardian, a luck dragon who lives in the Library in Parallel Parchment
- Viridian Fields, engineer, mechanic, and hacker extraordinaire
- Mink and Puppy, a childish and adventurous girl and her huge fuzzy friend
- Space Turtle, friend to children everywhere
- Ode Sparrowmoon, cursed ghost hunter
- Meztli Kuu, skilled magician, researcher, and field librarian
- Izeli Venture, daredevil and explorer
